Complaining about politics is easy. Building power is a learned skill. “Take the Lead” is a structured civic leadership and grassroots organizing training created by Equal Ground to teach everyday Floridians how to actually participate in local democracy instead of just reacting to it. The program walks participants through how local government functions, how policy decisions get made, and how ordinary residents can influence outcomes at the city, county, and state level.
Participants learn practical advocacy skills: running effective meetings, speaking at public comment sessions, communicating with elected officials, organizing neighbors, coalition-building, voter outreach, and navigating school boards and municipal commissions. The training is especially useful for first-time activists, community volunteers, mutual aid organizers, and anyone considering running for local office but who has no idea where to start.
Unlike national political trainings, this one is tailored to Florida’s legal structure and political environment — meaning attendees leave knowing how Sunshine Laws, public records, county commissions, and state agencies actually operate in practice. The goal isn’t performative activism; it’s creating informed local leaders capable of sustained civic engagement and community advocacy.
This is one of the clearest entry points for turning concerned residents into trained organizers, public speakers, and future candidates. Many people want to help their community but don’t know how government works — this course fills that gap and builds a pipeline of people who can influence policy, support voter engagement, and strengthen democratic participation at the local level.
