Indigenous peoples were defending this land long before colonizers invented borders, pipelines, and corporations with legal “personhood.” The Indigenous Sovereignty category uplifts the movements restoring land rights, protecting sacred places, honoring treaties, reviving languages, and ensuring Native nations control their own futures — not the government or extractive industries.
We follow the frontline defenders fighting environmental destruction, cultural erasure, and political neglect — and we listen when Indigenous leaders say what justice actually looks like. Sovereignty isn’t symbolic — it’s power, authority, and self-determination.
This land is still Indigenous land. It’s time the systems respected that.
