European Alternatives is a transnational civil society organisation that is focused on democracy, equality, and culture beyond the nation-state. It was founded in 2007 and has since expanded its work across Europe and beyond. Because national boundaries often limit civic participation and social movements, the organisation was created to invent and support alternatives that operate across borders.
The group provides participatory spaces where citizens and activists can engage in political, cultural, and social projects. As a result, transnational collaboration and network building are prioritized. European Alternatives connects local activists, scholars, and policymakers so that collective action can be more effective.
In addition, European Alternatives hosts campaigns, festivals, and educational programs. For example, the Transnational Organising School brings people together for training in grassroots organising and movement building. Activities are often focused on human rights, democratic participation, and cultural exchange across Europe.
The organisation also encourages creative political expression. Because conventional politics can be restrictive, European Alternatives creates forums for art, debate, and public discussions that challenge the status quo. Its mission is to imagine, demand, and enact a Europe where citizens have stronger collective voice and agency.
