The International Medical Devices Database (IMDD) is a public research tool created by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists to help patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, journalists, and policymakers access information about medical device recalls, safety alerts, and field safety notices from around the world. Developed as part of the award winning Implant Files investigation, the database was designed to address the lack of transparency surrounding medical device safety and provide the public with access to information that is often difficult to locate through government regulators alone. The database contains more than 120,000 records from dozens of countries and continues to serve as one of the most comprehensive resources available for researching medical device safety issues.
Users can search by device name, manufacturer, country, or safety event to identify recalls, warnings, and regulatory actions involving a wide range of medical products. The database includes information on everything from pacemakers, defibrillators, and artificial joints to surgical implants, diagnostic equipment, gloves, and other medical devices used in healthcare settings around the world. By bringing together records from multiple jurisdictions, the platform allows researchers to identify patterns and compare how safety concerns are handled across different countries.
The database emerged from the Implant Files investigation, a global collaboration involving more than 250 journalists in 36 countries who examined how medical devices are tested, approved, monitored, and recalled. Their reporting revealed significant gaps in oversight and demonstrated that important safety information often fails to reach patients and healthcare providers in a timely manner. In response, ICIJ created the database as a public service resource designed to improve transparency and patient awareness.
For researchers, journalists, healthcare advocates, and patient safety organizations, the International Medical Devices Database provides a powerful investigative tool for examining device safety records, identifying recall histories, and exploring relationships between manufacturers and reported safety events. The database is searchable online and can also be downloaded for deeper analysis and research projects.
