Visibility Brigade is a grassroots, non-violent volunteer movement that places physical messaging in public spaces—especially pedestrian overpasses over busy roads—to engage everyday people and activate pro-democracy participation. The project began in 2020 in Paramus, New Jersey, out of frustration at the lack of visible, real-world civic messaging and has since grown to include hundreds of local brigades nationwide.
What They Do
-
Organize local volunteer groups to hold large visible signs with pro-democracy messages overpasses and other busy public spaces.
-
Provide toolkits and protocols on safe public nonviolent display actions.
-
Encourage participants to wave and interact with passersby to show that active civic resistance and engagement are possible.
-
Support the creation of new local brigade chapters and coordinate national days of action such as Be Brave Day.
Why This Matters
Visibility Brigade addresses a common barrier in mass movements: perceived isolation. By physically displaying messages in everyday environments and cultivating a visible community presence, the movement aims to normalize civic action and empower more citizens to participate actively in defending democratic norms. This approach emphasizes visible collective presence as a catalyst for political engagement.
