Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP) is a national nonprofit offering free legal assistance and resources to journalists and newsrooms defending press freedom, First Amendment rights, and access to government information.
What This Resource Offers
RCFP provides a legal hotline, pro bono representation when appropriate, public records and open government guides, legal training, and support for access to court proceedings. Independent journalists, freelancers, documentary filmmakers, and news organizations can seek guidance on reporting rights, subpoenas, public records requests, and threats to newsgathering.
How to Use This Resource
Contact the RCFP Legal Hotline during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. For emergencies outside those hours, including an arrest or imminent threat of arrest, call 1-800-336-4243. Email hotline@rcfp.org. Contacting the hotline does not establish an attorney client relationship. Do not submit confidential information through the form.
Who It Serves and Where
Journalists and newsrooms throughout the United States, including independent and local reporters. Legal assistance is offered at no cost; RCFP assesses requests and available services.
